Children’s Catechism Study #1

Q: Who made you? A: God made me.

(Genesis 1:26, 27; 2:7; Ecclesiastes 12:1; Acts 17:24–29)

The Bible consistently teaches that man is the special creation of God. While these verses teach it explicitly, the whole Bible presumes this reality. In Genesis 1 we see that God created the first man and all mankind in his own image. Also, we see that God created man, not as another order of animal, but uniquely in God’s own image, and having dominion, or authority under God, over all other creatures.

In Genesis 2 we see further that man is essentially two parts: physical & spiritual, or body & soul. He is neither a body that has a soul, nor a soul that has a body. Man becomes man when the physical creation & the breath of life are joined together.

The last two passages teach that God created you individually, not just our first parents. Ecclesiastes 12:1 calls you to remember “your Creator” not simply “the creator”. Much could be said about Acts 17:24-29, but for the sake of brevity I will focus on “he himself gives to all mankind life and breath and everything.” If He gives life to all mankind, then he gives it to you as well.

The “so-what” here shapes absolutely everything we believe about absolutely everything. Neither you, nor anyone you know are simply cosmic accidents. You are not stardust. You are the special creation of God, made to show his image to all of creation.

Because you are God’s creation, this also means that God has ownership of you. He has controlling authority over you. As we will see in later studies, he has given you his expectations for you. We find these in his law, or commands. Sadly, none of his image bearers from the very first until now, including you, have kept them. They all rebelled, we have all rebelled, you have rebelled against your Creator.

Praise be to God that the one who is the exact image of God, came to reconcile to God everyone who would turn from their rebellion, and trust in the uncreated Son.

Grace & Peace,
